Terre Haute Plans for Tomorrow

Today marked a day in history for the city of Terre Haute.

City officials announced the end of the nickname "terrible haute."

They say, as a community, we're all apart of the new initiative Terre Haute Tomorrow.

The question is, how will the community provide a better way of life for residents?

That's where Terre Haute Tomorrow comes in.

Terre Haute Tomorrow has an action plan.

Organizers say we need to work together, respect each other and acknowledge their faults to move forward.

Nick Garcia, a Terre Haute resident said, "It would be nice to have a little more activities such a family friendly stuff to do on the weekends."

That's exactly what the city of Terre Haute is planning to do. Terre Haute Tomorrow is a committee full of community leaders and citizens who want to make a change. The past "Terre Haute - A Level Above" initiative produced many results like greenspaces, trails, and recreation space.

Norman Lowery, Chairmen of Terre Haute Tomorrow said, "There were just a lot of successes from that plan so it was a 10 year plan also, well that came to a conclusion in 2011 so then the group reassembled."

Lowery says, it's Terre Haute Tomorrow's time to update the long-term plans. Five actions teams will focus on quality of life, economic development, workforce readiness, leadership, and infrastructure.

"From that we developed goals, and tasks, and action teams were developed to accomplish those various goals," said Lowery.

Many community leaders are on board, but they're still searching for more help.

The research is done, now it's time to tackle the issues and improve the communities gateways. Such as, improving the highways, renovate the high schools and build a multi-purpose sports complex.

"We compete for business and industry, we compete for people that wanna live here. We compete to have good schools or better schools, we compete on all fronts," said Lowery.

Residents like Nick Garcia who would like to see a change, agree with the Terre Haute Tomorrow vision.

"Something like Terre Haute Tomorrow would be a great asset in the city, trying to help bring out more people to things," said Garcia.

Terre Haute Tomorrow has a funding committee, to find local, state and national grants or other funding opportunities that can help support the new long-term plans.
